Most washer repair in Northern Virginia comes down to one of six root causes. Here is what each symptom means, what the repair involves, and what it costs in 2025.
A washer that fills with water and agitates normally but refuses to spin is one of the most common repair calls we receive. While the wash cycle may seem to run fine, the spin cycle places greater mechanical stress on the machine and requires multiple components to work together properly.
The lid switch on top-load washers and the door latch on front-loaders are safety mechanisms — the washer will not spin if they do not detect the lid or door is closed and locked. When these fail, the washer fills and agitates normally but stops before spinning. A fast, commonly stocked repair.
Top-load washers use a motor coupling that absorbs shock between the motor and transmission. When it fails, the motor runs but the drum does not spin. Front-loaders use a drive belt that wraps around the drum and motor pulley — when it breaks, the drum turns freely but the motor cannot drive it.
Digital front-loaders from LG, Samsung, and Whirlpool use a control board to manage every cycle stage. When the board fails, the washer may stop at spin, display error codes, or become completely unresponsive. Our brand-certified technicians use the correct diagnostic tools for each brand.
Standing water in the drum after a cycle is either a drain pump failure, a clogged drain hose, or a blocked pump filter. Here is how to tell them apart:
The drain pump forces water out of the drum at the end of each cycle. When it fails — due to a worn impeller or seized motor — water stays in the drum and the washer either stops mid-cycle or completes the cycle without draining.
Front-load washers have a pump filter (usually behind a small panel at the bottom front) that catches coins, lint, and debris. A blocked filter restricts or stops draining entirely. Our techs clear and clean the filter as part of every drain diagnosis.
The drain hose runs from the pump to the standpipe or laundry sink. A kink, clog, or incorrect hose height can prevent proper draining. Sometimes combined with a pump issue.
LG’s OE error and Samsung’s 5E (or SE) error both indicate a drain failure. These are among the most common error codes we see on Northern Virginia LG and Samsung front-loaders.
Water on your laundry room floor is never something to leave. Beyond the obvious inconvenience, a washing machine leak can damage flooring and cabinetry quickly — especially on second-floor laundry rooms common in newer Northern Virginia townhomes.
The rubber boot seal around the front-loader door is the most common source of front-load washer leaks. It deteriorates from regular use, mould, and cleaning product residue. Visible cracks or tears confirm the diagnosis.
The inlet valve controls water entering the machine. A cracked valve housing or faulty solenoid can drip continuously even when the washer is off. Inlet hose connections should also be checked.
When the drum bearing seal fails, it allows water to escape around the bearing housing during spin cycles. Usually accompanied by a loud grinding or roaring noise during spin.
A cracked pump housing leaks during the drain cycle. Common in older Whirlpool and Samsung front-loaders.
A washing machine that has developed a new noise during spin or agitation is telling you something specific. Here is what each sound points to:
Drum bearing failure — the bearing supports the drum shaft and when it deteriorates, it makes a grinding noise that gets progressively louder. Do not ignore this. A failed bearing puts strain on the drum seal and can lead to leaks.
Unbalanced load (often not a fault) or worn shock absorbers / suspension rods. If redistributing the load does not fix it, the suspension system needs inspection.
A foreign object (coin, bra underwire, button) trapped between the drum and tub. The object bangs around during every cycle. A technician can remove it without damage to the drum.
Drive belt slipping or idler pulley friction. Common in LG and Samsung front-loaders between 4–8 years old.
A washing machine that will not start at all — even though the power is on — is usually one of three things:
