Stop Cleaning Your Washer with Vinegar

Stop Cleaning Your Washer with Vinegar: How It Damages Seals & What to Use Instead

Vinegar is often praised as a natural cleaner — but using it in your washing machine can do more harm than good.

Why Vinegar Can Damage Your Washer

  • Rubber seal erosion: Vinegar is acidic. Repeated use can dry out and crack door gaskets and hoses.
  • Metal corrosion: Over time, acid can pit internal metal parts.
  • Shortened lifespan: Small damage adds up, leading to leaks and costly repairs.

Safer Ways to Clean Your Washer:

Method 1: Baking Soda + Hot Water

  1. Add ½ cup baking soda directly into the drum.
  2. Run the hottest, longest cycle.
  3. Wipe the drum and door seal after the cycle.

Method 2: Oxygen Bleach (Not Chlorine)

  1. Add 1 scoop of oxygen bleach to the drum.
  2. Run a hot cycle.
  3. Leave the door open to dry air.

Method 3: Manufacturer-Approved Washer Cleaner

  1. Use a cleaner recommended by your washer brand.
  2. Follow the label instructions (usually a hot cycle).
  3. Clean monthly for best results.

Method 4: Regular Maintenance

  1. Leave the door open after washes.
  2. Wipe the rubber seal weekly.
  3. Clean the detergent drawer monthly.
