Oven Won’t Heat Evenly — Calibrate Your Thermostat (DIY Guide)

Oven Won’t Heat Evenly? Calibrate Your Thermostat (DIY Guide)

Is your oven cooking your meal unevenly, burning one side of it or cooking the other side less than desired? If your oven is cooking your meal unevenly, the reason could be a miscalibrated oven thermostat. Oven thermostats, over time, tend to move a little, and as a result, the internal oven temperature and the set temperature may vary.

Signs Your Oven Needs Calibration

  • Food cooks too fast or too slow.
  • One side of the meal is burnt, and the other side is still raw.
  • Baked goods yield inconsistent results.
  • Recipes take significantly longer or less time to cook.

How to Calibrate Your Oven Thermostat (DIY)

To calibrate your oven, you will need to:

1. Test the Actual Temperature

Place a thermometer inside the oven and put it in the center. Set the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and 175 degrees Celsius. Let the oven heat for 20 minutes. Compare the thermometer’s reading and the oven’s setting.

2. Test the Temperature Difference

If the oven setting and the thermometer’s reading vary by 20 to 30 degrees, then your oven needs to be calibrated.

3. Adjust the Oven Calibration

To adjust the oven, you might find the oven’s control panel or the knob behind the temperature knob. You might find the following:
Check your oven’s user manual to find the oven calibration settings.
Adjust the temperature offset by a plus or a minus value, depending on the difference you read from the thermometer.

4. Test the Oven Again

Once you have adjusted your oven, place the thermometer inside it and set it to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Let the oven heat for 20 minutes and then check the thermometer’s reading to ensure the oven temperature setting and the thermometer’s reading match.
